Leather Bag Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Bag for Laptops, Travel & Everyday Use

Leather Bag Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Bag for Laptops, Travel & Everyday Use

One of the most common questions we get at Woodstock Leather isn't about colour or style — it's "will this actually fit what I need it to fit?" A beautiful bag that's too small for your 15" laptop, or too bulky for a weekend in Joburg, isn't a bag you'll reach for every day.

So before you fall in love with a leather bag based on looks alone, here's how to think about size — and which of our genuine leather bags suit which purpose.

1. Start with what's actually going inside

Most sizing regret comes from buying for the bag, not the contents. Ask yourself what you're packing for 90% of trips, not the one big exception.

A laptop and a few work essentials? You need internal padding and a sleeve, not just a big main compartment. Look at our Laptop Bags and Laptop Sleeves collections — most are built around 13"–15" devices.

An overnight or weekend trip? You're looking for structured volume without bulk. Our Duffel Bags and Weekend Bags are designed for exactly this — enough room for two to three days away.

Daily essentials — wallet, phone, keys, a notebook? You don't need a large bag at all. A Sling Bag or compact Handbag will be lighter on your shoulder and easier to carry all day.

2. Match the bag to your laptop size, not your bag preference

This is where most "will it fit?" support questions come from. As a rule of thumb:

13"–13.3" laptops, like a MacBook Air — most laptop sleeves and slimmer work bags will fit comfortably.

14"–15" laptops, like a MacBook Pro or most Windows laptops — check the bag's internal laptop compartment dimensions specifically, not just the bag's overall size.

16" and larger, or a laptop already in a protective case — go for our larger work bags, or a duffel-style bag with a padded laptop sleeve insert.

Our Austin Portfolio and Parker 15" Messenger Bag are both built around laptops up to 15", with a dedicated padded compartment — always check this against your specific laptop's dimensions, not just the screen size, since chunkier gaming or older laptops can be deceptively thick.

3. Think in terms of what fits on your body, not just litres

Capacity means very little until you can picture it. Here's a simpler way to think about it:

Small — wallet, phone, sunglasses, keys. Think Sunglasses Pouches and small accessory bags.

Medium — your everyday carry. A laptop sleeve, a notebook, a charger, maybe lunch. This is where most Sling Bags and compact handbags live.

Large — a full work day or short trip. Most of our Work Bags sit here — 26cm (H) x 14cm (W) x 32cm (L), enough for a laptop, documents, and the everyday essentials.

Weekender or Duffel — an overnight bag or weekend away. This is duffel and weekender territory — bags like the Hudson Canvas and Leather Weekender Bag are built for exactly this.

4. Always check the dimensions on the product page, not just the photos

Every Woodstock Leather product page lists exact dimensions — height, width and length — under Product Specifications. Photography can make a compact bag look larger than it is, or vice versa, especially on a model. Before you buy:

Grab a tape measure, or use your laptop, a shoebox, or a weekend bag you already own as a real-world comparison.

Check the dimensions listed on the product page against what you're packing.

If you're between two sizes, our team can help — get in touch before you order and we'll talk you through it.

5. When in doubt, go slightly bigger

A bag that's slightly larger than you need still works fine — you simply don't fill it completely. A bag that's too small for your laptop or weekend kit, on the other hand, is a bag you'll stop using. If you're torn between two sizes in the same style, the larger option is almost always the safer choice for genuine, everyday use.
